Autumn

As I stand in the crunchy leaves under my feet it gets colder so I sit by my fire.  I have hot cocoa to warm me up.  I had a blanket while I was watching a movie.  I love autumn.  My blanket was a mermaid.  I look outside and it is dark as people in an alley.

Autumn

Crunch, crunch under my feet, leaves are crunching as loud as a lion.  The leaves are golden as a star.  I smell the rotting leaves of autumn as rotten as a rotten potato.  I see kids as joyful as a really playful dog.  The breeze is as cold as winter.  I feel wet grass as wet as snow under my feet.  I could hear birds chirping as loud as an owl.

I think autumn is cool because the leaves are pretty.

Autumn

Crack, crunch!  I stepped on the shiny golden leaves.  As I walked around the town the leaves fell on my head.  I saw a lot of leaves that were as shiny as a chest.  The trees were getting naked like a candy bar.  The cars were faster than lightening.  Every tree I went under, the leaves fell like snow on my head.  I saw people wearing jerseys warmer than my dog.  I sat on the bench and I saw butterflies hibernating in Victoria Park.  The sun was glistening in the water.  I watched the birds fly in the sky.  Later in the afternoon it started to rain.  The clouds looked as sad as a stray puppy.  I sat inside and eventually the sun came back out.

I like autumn because I always get to play on the computer when it’s too cold to go outside.

Autumn

Crunch, crack!  As I walk through the leaves there is a crunch, cracking sound because it is autumn.

The autumn trees are beautiful with leaves orange and red like starts.  The golden leaves are spiraling.  I feel the leaves.  The hot summer has gone now.  I can hear the wind whistling under the door.

Autumn

Crunch, crack!  When I walked on top of the crunchy autumn leaves they were like dynamite exploding.

The yuck autumn bugs went into my mouth.  High in the sky birds were flying like a tornado.  I could her the wind whistling as loud as a gun.  The leaves were beautiful as diamonds.  I could smell the autumn branches.

I think autumn is the best because you can have leaf fights.

Autumn

Crack, crack, I hear leaves sweep on the ground like paper.  As I stroll in the park on a sunny autumn day leaves come off the trees like raindrops.  The leaves smell like sand.  I feel the cold breeze freeze my fingers.  I see red leaves.

Autumn

While I opened my eyes I saw leaves fluttering in the breeze as the darkness shone through the curtains.

As the trees started to begin getting bare the leaves blew onto the lawn.  Leaves as bright as gold started to crunch as I stepped on them.  I could hear the wind whistle as I ran around in the leaves.  Sitting on the bench I saw leaves on the ground looking like salt and pepper on potatoes.  I could see butterflies hibernating in trees.  I feel wet damp grass under my feet as cold as ice.  I could see trees losing leaves.  Strolling through the garden I could hear the wind whistling.  Under the clouds were birds leaving to a warmer country.  As I walked among the concrete I started to hear birds chirping.  As I left I saw dead flowers.

I think autumn is fun because nature disappears and you get more space.  I like autumn because you get to play in lots of crunchy leaves.

Autumn

As my eyes open up I pull up my covers that were bright blue and green.  The leaves were orange as a mandarin.  The leaves in the wild wind blow as hard as a hurricane.  Autumn is as cold as very cold fresh air.

The trees were as naked as a bare bum.  I taste the wind blowing through my mouth.  The wind was as cold as rain.  I feel leaves falling down on my head.  The sky was as gray as a gray crayon.  I saw heaps of birds fluttering in the gray sky.  I hear birds twittering loudly in the gray sky.

I like autumn because on cold days I love to play rugby but on hot days I wouldn’t last a minute.

Autumn

As I hopped out of bed I looked out the window.  Leaves were everywhere.  That meant it was autumn!

Later on that morning I went to the park.  There I was walking through crunchy gold leaves like chips.  Chirp, chirp, went the birds.  Kicking leaves, I had a great idea.  I could make a pile of leaves.

I love the autumn colours.  I love autumn because the colours are pretty.

Autumn

Crunch, crunch.  I hopped out of bed.  I looked out the window and it looked like it was snowing.  Leaves were blowing off the trees like a butterfly fluttering.  I saw leaves like fire.  I saw kids making snowmen with leaves.  I saw dogs digging in the leaf piles.  I smell rotting leaves.  Chirp!  I hear birds chirping.  I could feel wet grass.  I could taste chocolate on the leaves.  I could see birds hibernating.  I went to the park.  Leaves were falling down.

Autumn

Swish, swish. Wait, what? It’s already autumn? I jumped out of my bed then looked out my window…guess what? The trees were naked!  I jumped on my bed with my legs and my arms separated miserably.  I was as cold as a newborn kitten with no fur!  I decided to go downstairs to get a nice cup of hot cocoa.  When the raindrops were running and jumping on my roof I rolled my eyes miserably.  I looked outside then saw my courtyard as frozen as a block of ice.

I don’t really like autumn because the raindrops jump on my roof.

Autumn

When I heard a noise it was the autumn leaves falling as fast as a car.  Red leaves were as red as a rose.  The leaves were as green as a pear and as crunchy as paper.  I hear the crunchy leaves blowing in the wind.  The wind is going as fast as a plane taking off.  The air was as fresh as ice.  I smell the beautiful fresh air.

I love autumn because the crunchy leaves fall down of the trees.  It is so cool.

Autumn

I was so excited because it was autumn.

Autumn is when the leaves change colour like red and orange.  You can scrape them up and jump in them.  You have to wear hats as warm as a hot chocolate.  The leaves are crunchier than crackle.  I can see the fire and I hear the fire crackling like salad.  I’m snuggled beside the fire drinking hot cocoa.  When I’m driving in my car I see frost and fog, dustier than clouds.  The sky is bluer than the sea.

I love autumn because I get hot chocolates.

Autumn

As I stroll through the park I can hear leaves crunching under my shoes.  On the beach I can see leaves falling like butterflies flitting down.  The wind is very, very cold.  It is even fun to watch the leaves turning colour.  There are some very, very cool looking colourful leaves.  I can see lots of butterflies going to hibernate.  The trees are as pretty as flowers.  The leaves are as crunchy as a very crunchy cookie.

I like autumn because it is really beautiful.

Autumn

As I woke up I could her the wind blowing on my window.  It was as loud as a bomb exploding.  Then I went outside to see, the sky was as cloudy as a storm.  The grass was as green as vines.  The roof was as wet as a waterfall.  I looked up at the sun.  It was as bright as a light shining.  Then I went for a walk.  It was as long as a museum.  The leaves are as crunchy as a crunchy bar.

I love autumn because it is warm.

Autumn

As I woke up I felt the autumn breeze sweep through my bedroom window.  I got dressed, had breakfast and went to play outside with my friends.  After playing I sat down in front of the TV and slowly drank my hot chocolate and ate my noodles.  While I ate and drank I started to wonder why leaves are as orange as a fruit bat and as crunchy as cornflakes and as dead as dinosaurs.  I looked out the window and saw leaves glide like birds.  I heard rakes grinding like diggers.

I think autumn is the best because it is not too cold and not too hot.

Autumn

Autumn is a cold season.

In autumn orange leaves fall off the trees.  When I run outside on the grass I slip and slide.  When I look outside my window I see trees all bare.  I hear rain pitter-pattering on my roof.  I hear warm fires burning.  I feel blankets on my bed.  I feel my woolly hat stuck on my head.  I taste yummy chocolate when I sit down on the couch and watch some TV.  I taste hot hot-cross buns.  I play leaf fights with my brother.  I felt so fantastic because I got to jump in the crunchy leaves but after I got all cold.  As I cross by the snowy mountains in my car I start to shiver.  My family and I put on coats as warm as heaters.  When I go to the park I jump in all the leaves.  The leaves are as crunchy as a crunchy bar.

I think autumn is fun because I like to wear warm clothes.

By Amelia

Autumn

Yeah, I’m so excited because it’s autumn and I can jump in the leaves.

I am as excited as my cousin seeing me.  I can see reddish leaves falling.  As I walk the leaves go crunch, crunch, crack, crack.  I can hear the fire.  I am ready to have a hot chocolate.  After I finish I go outside and jump in the leaves and I prank Daniel.  I am under pinkish red, yellow orange and green leaves.

Autumn

Ooh, so annoying!  My alarm went off.  I looked out my lovely curtains.  I thought it was still summer but it was autumn.

I saw leaves falling down on to the ground.  Golden leaves were sweeping on the grass.  My brother and I played in the leaves.  We raked them up into 2 big piles as big as an elephant.  Then it started to get so, so cold so I put on a hat so I didn’t get earache.  I felt the leaves crunching under my feet.  I felt so excited.  Butterflies and birds were hibernating in the trees.  The wind was as fresh as snow.  I feel like covering myself in blankets and having a milo while watching a movie in bed.

I think it is so exciting because I get a hot chocolate on cold mornings.

Autumn

Goodbye summer!  As I walk across the ground I hear crunch, crunch.  Leaves are crunching as I go.  When I am inside I see golden leaves falling down.  The wind is going bang, crash, boom.  I walk outside.  I smell fresh air.  I see trees with no leaves.  Sweep, sweep, wind is gliding, trees are whistling.  The sky is the lightest blue in the world.  The clouds are as white as a sheep’s wool.

I think autumn is the best because you play in leaves.

Autumn

“Go away Erika. It’s still dark!  I don’t want to wake up. ”
“But, but, it’s autumn.”
“Alright, I’ll come. Let’s go outside?”
When I step outside I hear crunch, crunch.  All the leaves crunch.  I see colourful leaves like a rainbow.  I hear birds twirping.  I see butterflies.  I smell leaves and air.

I like autumn because there is so much to find.

Autumn

I was waking up and looking out my window.  I looked at the autumn colours, orange and red.  It looked like an autumn meteor.  It still was the morning, the sun was as bright as a torch.  The grass was as green as ever.  The fire was burning as hot as the sun.  The sky was shining bright.  Animals were hibernating in trees.  I was following paths with the shining grass.  Rivers were glowing.  The sea was clear.  Trees were everywhere.  Animals were beautiful.  Deer were under trees.  Birds were flying across the land.  The sun was going down.  The sky was orange.

I thought, what would it be like the next day.  I hope it would be like today.

Autumn

Autumn leaves are falling down on the ground and going a lop, a lop in the cold air.  The trees are getting naked like unwrapping a candy bar.  The leaves on evergreen trees don’t fall off.  I hear whistling in the air.  I feel the cold wind.  I see the butterflies hibernating.  The leaves get crunchy.

Rangiora was so lucky to have the Big Top come to town! We went for a walk to have a look at the way the circus set up then we wrote a story - "As I hide under the seats...."

The Circus

As I hide under the seats I see people getting fired out of a cannonball and shooting in the air as fast as the wind.  I see gymnasts go mad with tricks.  I see seals with fire sticks.  I hear motorbikes roaring like thunder.  I hear bearded ladies laughing and I hear clown speaking.  I also see clowns juggling on unicycles.  My heart feels excited but my heart also feels worried because someone might get hurt or get an injury.

“Kia Ora ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Weber Brothers’ Circus!” called the Ringmaster.
He has glistening white teeth like snow.  He has glittering zigzags on his hat and his jacket.  He has a shiny red shirt.  He is standing at the entrance place at the front of the circus.

By Beth

The Circus

As I hide under the seat I hear monkeys chattering and laughing like old people laughing and chatting.  I see unicycles riding as fast as a cheetah.  I feel as scared as a mouse being chased by a tiger.  I am excited when I see the gymnastic people.  I can see a human cannonball.

The Ringmaster shouted, “Ladies and gentlemen,” as he bursts out onto the stage.  He has the shiniest shirt.  It is brighter than the sun.  He has a flat hat that is flatter than a squashed fly.  He tie is flasher than lightning.  His face is younger than a cat.

By Olivia

The Circus

As I hide under the seats I see juggling and a clown.  I hear slapping as loud as a howling fox.  I feel as scared as a mouse.  I could also see gymnasts that are as clever as a cheetah.  The tight ropes are also clever.  I feel so scared because I think somebody is going to kick me in the face.  It is loud as a wolf howling.  I see motorbike tricks.

When the Ringmaster came in he shouted, “Ladies and gentlemen, girls and boys, welcome to the circus.”  The Ringmaster is as sparkly as glitter.  He has red, blue, black and silver on his clothes.  He has one hand up and one in the middle.  He has blue eyes.  He has skinny legs like a spider.

By Katie

The Circus

As I hide under the seats I see clowns.  I can hear clapping.  I feel happy.  At the circus it is amazing because a person got fired out of a cannon.  They have an elephant called Jumbo.  At the end the Ringmaster came and said, “Welcome to the tightrope walkers.”  They balanced like a cloud.  They cut a person in half.  The clown juggled as fast as a car.  The tent was as colourful as a rainbow.  The clapping was like the noise of cars.  I feel as scared as a mouse.

The Ringmaster walked proudly into the room.  He talked as he walked into the room.  “You will see impossible tricks.  You will see amazing acrobats flip up in the sky.  Sit close to see the big fat clown’s big red nose.”

By Lucy

The Circus

As I hide under the seats I see a clown squirt their noses and the elephants galloping also.  The lions look really scary.  I thought the lion was going to kill me but it just stayed on the stage.  I felt really, really scared.  I thought I was going to get caught.  I heard the audience clapping at the clowns.  I was hearing an elephant.  I hear that lion as loud as an elephant.  The clowns’ horn was as loud as a lion’s roar.  I was as scared as a mouse.  I felt like I was a mouse that was going to get eaten by a cat.  I felt scared because there was an elephant that was as loud as my dog.  The clown looked really suspicious.

The Ringmaster shouted and said, “Ladies and gentlemen,” as he burst in to the room.  He had golden teeth.  His tie was as red as blood and he had a crazy jacket all red and blue with thunderbolts.  He wowed the audience.  His jacket has shiny bright buttons on it.  The buttons are brown and black.  He holds the microphone.

By Max

The Circus

As I hide under the seats I see a monkey and it saw me.  Someone kicked me and it hurt.  I can hear bells.  I feel amazed and scared.  I feel as scared as a mouse being chased by an elephant.

The Ringmaster tiptoed into the room and said, “Would you like a song?”

He had a shiny tie that shone like the sun shining on a diamond.  His voice sounded like a dinosaur roaring.

The Circus

One Saturday morning I sneaked off to the circus.  I saw the ticket lady.  I didn’t know what to do so I sneaked behind the track and I got into the circus….
When I got in I was really surprised that there were a lot of people.  When I got to a seat I saw the clowns.  I accidentally picked a seat that a person was sitting at so as quick as I could I hid under the seats.  While I was under the seats I saw millions of funny people.  I said to myself, “Try not to laugh…” but I did.  I was lucky because the people were cheering and clapping at the same time.

The Ringmaster has a very sparkly hat that sparkles like the stars.  His tuxedo is as shiny as glass.  He is more handsome than anybody in the world.  He is as loud as trumpets.  His pants are black with a little bit of blue like the night sky.

The Circus

I can hear monkeys chattering.  I feel scared because I might get kicked in the face.  It looked funny when the clown looked happy and the clown looked clumsy.  My heart was beating like a scared lion.  I could hear a lion roaring really loudly.  I could hear dogs barking really loudly.

The Ringmaster is sparkly as the sun.  He had stripes on his hat and on his jacket that looked like Harry Potter’s scar.  He was very, very loud.  He had lots of sparkles.  He had a wand and he waved it around.  He had blue eyes that sparkled like the ocean.  His hat was as shiny as the sun.

The Circus

As quiet as a mouse on a sunny Tuesday I snuck into the circus!  I saw a man getting blasted out of a cannon.  I saw an acrobat swinging on a trapeze.  I heard the crowd clapping, cheering and laughing.  I heard seals clapping their flippers.  I heard engines roaring.

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Weber Brothers’ Circus,’ shouted the Ringmaster.  Then the grand finale started.  I heard elephants’ feet booming through the circus floor.  A donkey galloped towards the Ringmaster.  The crowd stared in horror.  As quick as lightning the Ringmaster jumped on the donkey.

The Circus

As I hide under the seats I see monkeys jumping through the ring of fire and I hear the song called This Is Me.  I feel happy because it was exciting to watch.  There is a Ringmaster and a human cannonball and unicycles.  I see a jumbo elephant, a giant and a bearded clown, a dwarf and a motorcycle.

The Ringmaster has a silver coat and a jacket with thunder bolts and these are even on his hat too.  He has some black pants.  He has red, blue and silver stripes too.  He has some patterns on his clothes.  He has blue eyes.  He is the boss and he tells everybody what happens.  His voice is nice.

The Circus

As I hide under the seats I see fire sticks going into the sky.  I see clowns juggling in the air.  I see dwarfs doing gymnastics like a butterfly.  They were using juggling balls.  I saw lions going through hoops like a bouncy ball.

“Kia Ora ladies and gentlemen,” the Ringmaster cried.  He has a glistening jacket like the sun.  His teeth are white like a paintbrush.  His tie is as red as a rose.  His pants are as black as a blueberry.

The Circus

As I hide under the seats I see seals balancing balls as high as a balloon flying in the room.  I see tightrope walkers.  I see men driving motorbikes.  I see the Ringmaster introducing the show.  I see clown on their unicycles.  I see a lion going through a ring of fire.  I see acrobats performing a show.  I see someone going in a human cannonball.  I see someone doing a magic trick.  I hear motorbikes roaring like crazy.  I hear people clapping like mad people.  I hear balloons popping.  I hear people laughing and I hear music in my ears.  I hear balls bouncing on the ground.  I hear people chatting.  I hear bells ringing in my ears.  I hear the Ringmaster introducing the show.  I feel excited.

The Circus

As I hide under the seats I see… dogs.  I can hear lions roaring in my ear.  I can hear elephants.  I can hear cannonballs.  My heart feels as scared as a mouse.  I can hear fire sticks moving around.

The Ringmaster shouted, “Ladies and gentlemen,” as he burst on to the stage.  He had a gold vest and he had a bright red tie.  His hat was red and black.  He has a red jacket.  He had black and blue pants.  He had golden teeth.  He carries a wand.

The Circus

As I hide under the seats I see tightrope walkers, a clown juggling and lions jumping through hoops of fire.  I see people go in a box and get cut in half.  I see men doing motorcycle tricks.  I hear lions growling.  I hear motorcycles roaring like thunder.  I hear the crowd clapping like crazy.  I hear clowns laughing.  I hear seals barking like wild animals.  My heart feels worried that someone’s going to find me.  My heart feels unsafe from people’s feet.  My tummy rumbles like it’s hungry as a fat guy.  My body shakes because I’m scared as a mouse.

The Ringmaster has black hair as dark as the night sky.  His eyes are as blue as the ocean.  He has a vest that shines like gold.  His vest is as red as lava, as blue as the sky and as silver as iron.
“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome to the circus!” shouts the Ringmaster in a high-pitched voice.  He’s holding a micro-phone.  There’s lots of excitement.  He sounds like a monkey.  He waves to everyone and cheers.

The Circus

As I hide under the seats I see seals with balls.  I can hear people clapping.  My heart feels like it’s pumping as fast as a cheetah running.  As I hide under the seats I see acrobats performing an awesome show at the circus.  I see monkeys hanging from the roof with make-up on.  I see one man jumping through a ring of hot, hot fire as hot as the sun.  I see magic tricks from a lady on stilts as high as a house.  I can hear dogs barking while doing handstands with wigs on their heads.  I hear motorbikes pumping up their engines as loud as thunder.  I hear so much clapping when it is the end of the show.  I hear ladies, with bright red lipstick as bright as the sun, when they sing out loud and do tricks with their hoola-hoops.  My heart feels like a kangaroo jumping because I’m excited.  My heart feels nervous.

The Ringmaster’s eyes look as blue as the sea.  His teeth look so white they look as clean as white paper.  “Oh, look at me,” he said with a big great loud voice.  The Ringmaster’s pants were as black as a black ear.  When he welcomed people he talked so growly like a big angry bear.  The Ringmaster was holding a big fire stick.  His hat was red, black and silver.  The silver was as glittery as the shiny sea.  He had a big red fire colour with silver on his tie.  The Ringmaster’s hair was brown.

The Circus

One afternoon I snuck in to a circus.  I was under a table and I thought I would get caught; somebody nearly saw me.  I could see the Ringmaster shoot the human cannonball.  I could hear clowns going… Honk! Honk!  I could feel cotton candy because I was eating it.  I was as sneaky as a mouse.  There were lots of magic fire sticks and seals but instead of a ball there was a bomb.

The Ringmaster had spikes on his jacket and he had a top hat.  He sat on a chair.  He hopped in a ring and it spun around super fast.  He sounded like Darth Vader.

The Circus

As I hide under the seats I hear motorbikes.  I see clowns that eat fire and people cut in half.  I felt as scared as an elephant and as happy as a clown as I sit as quietly as a mouse.  I was scared that I would be seen.  I was feeling good when I recognized Finn’s shoes so I wasn’t that scared anymore.

The Ringmaster has a red jacket that sparkles.  He walked onto the stage like a star.  His vest sparkled like a diamond.  He had lightning strikes that were blue and red.  “Welcome to my show, you will see clowns riding a unicycle.”

The Circus

As I hide under the seats I see dogs.  I can hear the tent crackling because of the wind.  My heart feels great.  The circus is great because it has the human cannonball and because I hear seals barking loudly.  I hear fire sticks crackling and chips crunching like crazy.  I hear popcorn popping and roaring like madness.  I love the circus but my favourite is the lion growling.  I hear drunk people laughing.  The acrobats are the best because they do tight rope walking but the clowns are funny.  The elephant will shake the seats.  I like the circus.

The Ringmaster said, “Welcome ladies and gentlemen, have a nice afternoon.  First we have the dogs up to entertain you while we go and get the elephants ready.”
He has a really shiny hat on.  He has a really glittery bow tie and his pants have a really shiny strip on each side.  His face is smooth.  He has green eyes.  He has really short hair and a really shiny smile.

The Ringmaster said, “Welcome ladies and gentlemen.”  He has a sparkly vest like the sun shining on a ring.  He has red, black and silver hat.  He has black pants like a bear.  He has blue eyes like the sea.  He has black hair like a black felt pen.  He has a red tie as red as a rose.  He has pink lips like a pig.  He has shiny black buttons like a bear.

The Circus
At the circus you can hear laughing, gasping, music and fire sizzling.  Under the seats it was so scary!  Maybe I would get caught!  I nearly screamed I was so scared.  I saw a clown on a tight rope juggling fire sticks, also seals with balls, acrobats doing flips and swinging from ropes.  I saw people shoot out of cannons.  It was late at night and people were singing as loud as 40 people yelling but the worst thing happened…. I got caught!  I was as scared as a mouse and I gasped as I got thrown outside.

A ringmaster is the manager of all circuses.  They wear very, very expensive clothes like sparkly clothes and also very shiny top hats.  They burst inside the show.  It would take them about probably two or three hours to get ready for the circus to begin.  They wear sparkly bow ties such as someone glued it and dumped 20 bottles of glitter on his outfit.  Some hold canes and some hold microphones.  The performers get announced by the ringmaster.  Some people do stuff such as walking on water, some how?!

We have been studying Maori Myths and the art used to illustrate Maori stories.
The Three Songs of Nature
By Bella

Once there were three singing pieces of nature.  There was a tree, a flower and the sun.  Whakatika was a rose flower and Rākau was a tree.  They were both jealous of Te Rā the Sun because he could fly  and was a beautiful colour like a tulip.  Then Rākau went and sang a song to herself to make her feel better about Te Rā.  Then Te Ra somehow just disappeared to see his cousin, the Te Moana, the Ocean, but he didn’t tell the others.  The Whakatika and Rākau were furious when Te Hau the wind told them where Te Rā had gone.  They were so mad they signed his name out of the singing group and the sun never spoke or sang again.

Space
By Izak

There was a Sky God, Rangi,  and a star, Whakakau, and it was a star land.  It was a big land that carried all of the planets.  There were star shaped as trees and animals.  The Sky God made everything in the sky.  He took the stars and made the shapes with the stars.  The Sky God made sky people and the sky god made star balloons called clouds so that the people could float around in space.  The God of the Sky made star shells and star crabs and star sharks.  Then he made star deer and star shaped moas.  One day the animals, people and trees started fighting so much the Sky God got really angry and he threw all the people, the animals and trees to Earth.  They were never allowed to return to the sky.

Sheep
By Jasmine

One day Maui got his fish hook and threw it in the clouds and got his hook caught in a bit of cloud.

He made it into an oval shape and made some legs.  Then he put it on the cloud and found two black stones and put them onto the cloud,  He got a bit more of the cloud and made a circle that he put onto the back of his cloud shape.  Maui used his powers and the shape came to life.

This is how sheep came to be in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

How the Rainbows Appeared
By Leilani

One day Maui the demi god of the wind and sea wanted to make the world more colourful so he decided to make a rainbow, Tūāwhiorangi.

First he crabbed a piece of ribbon and started gluing the ribbons together.  Maui had all the main colours.  Once he was done he used the hook from his grandmother to throw the rainbow in the sky but then he realised it wouldn’t move and he discovered he had put too much glue on so he started to pull off the glue and threw the rainbow, Tūāwhiorangi,  in the sky.  Maui was covered in glue.

He started to cry and as the sun, Te Rā shone through his tears, wai, the rainbow, Tūāwhiorangi, appeared and shone like a colourful sun.
How Space Was Created.
By Fox

Once the sky father, Rangi, had a brother.  His name was Space Guy. He planned to make other Worlds, he called them planets. The area was called space. He had told his brother Rangi but Rangi did not like his idea.  He did it anyway so he went outside and created space.

When Rangi woke he got really mad, riri, and Rangi put ugly creatures on Space Guy’s planets and called them aliens. Space Guy liked it and kept it like that until this day.

The Creation of the Demi God.
By Isabella

Laid in the earth was the first Taniwha and Papa was delighted, so she made a demi God, his name was Maui.  The other Gods were a little nuts about Maui, so Papa made another four Gods to be his brothers. Maui did lots of nice things for his people like slowing the sun, creating the moon, freeing his brothers from the seven sisters and he found fire from the fire God too.  He made wakas and greenstone but then one day he found the Goddess of Death. She was so beautiful that he married her and they had children.

Tangaroa-whaiariki, God of the sea and Wai-Riki god of the good stuff in the world and Wai-Rangi god of the bad stuff in the world. Whenever Wai-Riki made the sun Wai-Rangi gave the sunburns. Whenever Wai-Riki made fish Wai-Rangi gave them hard bones. Whenever Wai-Riki made life Wai-Rangi made death, so if you see Maui he is a demi God. He kept New Zealand and two korus to protect it.

Tahiwahi and his Brother Panako
By Brooklin

A long time ago there were two Taniwhas, Tahiwahi and Panako.

One day Tahiwahi said, “I am going to scare some people, would you like to come?”  “No I do not want to scare people today” replied Panako. “But you love scaring people” said Tahiwahi. “No, I only like scaring kids,” said Panako.
“So I am staying here.” So Tahiwahi went to scare the people. It was starting to get dark. Panako was cold and he wanted to be with Tahiwahi.  Panako sighed, “ I miss Tahiwahi, he was the colour of the rainbow and, like a star he shines like the sun. I should have gone with him”.

Panako was so upset he started crying and shaking.  Suddenly rocks came down and one of them fell on top of Panako and he got hurt.  When Tahiwahi came back he named the shaking of the Earth an earthquake, kumekume a Ruaumoko.

How the Earth Became a Circle
By Regan

How did the Māori people not know the Earth was a circle?  It was because there were no scientists around.

Māori tribes were not really respecting each other really well and were arguing because some of the people thought the Earth was a square.  So the Māori people ran quickly to the God of War to see what shape the earth was.  They wanted to know because they wanted to know more things so they could be smart.

They went to the God of War, but looking them in their eyes, he told them the Earth was a circle.  Now the Māori people were happy and smart.

How the Earth Became a Circle
by Tom

Did you ever wonder how the Earth became a circle?  It all started here in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

The Earth started square and was just lying in the solar system.  All of a sudden a meteorite came crashing down.  It was about to hit Earth but on the way it hit Mars and the front part of it broke.  Then the meteorite cuddled around Earth and squeezed and squeezed around Earth.  It was squeezing so tight that it broke but the Earth had already been squashed into a circle.

From then on Earth has always been a circle.

Rangi and Papa
By Lily

One day there was a father and a mother called Rangi and Papa.

They were so close they had seventy kids.  The kids wanted to kill their parents because they wanted to break free.  One of the kids pushed so hard they got separated.  Rangi and Papa cried nonstop.  Rangi’s brother got really riri, angry, because Rangi did not stop crying and he made thunder and lightning come shooting down.

Rangi’s brother sent Rangi to be God of the Sky and Papa stayed on the ground as Earth Mother.

The Taniwha and Maui
By Aryan

One night all of the people in the village were asleep but Maui and four of his brothers were awake.

They were making a plan to stop the Taniwha making lots of noise and scaring all the animals away.  Maui and his brothers went to the Taniwha’s home.  The evil Taniwha was asleep then the Taniwha woke up so Maui hit the Taniwha five times.

The Taniwha was dead so the brothers went back home to their village and went to sleep.

The South Island
By Annique

Long ago Maui and his brothers went fishing in the morning.

Maui punched his nose and it bled.  He did this so he had bait for the fish.  He is a demi God so his ancestors gave him a fishhook to get fish.  He tied his hood to rope then he put his blood on the hook and threw it into the water and waited until he caught a fish.  Finally he caught a huge fish that was heavy and strong and was pulling the rope.  It didn’t look like a fish but it looked like a stingray.  Maui was as strong as an elephant and he pulled the rope he had made with flax and he pulled the stingray up but he didn’t know where to put it.

Maui lay it on the sea and named it the South Island.  That is how Waipounamu, the South Island came.

The Spooky Tree
By Jessica

One day in a dark and spooky forest there stood a tree. It was a pretty wide one as big as a Taniwha house.

Then one day a Taniwha moved into it. It was pretty small for a Taniwha. The sun, Te Rā, grew brighter and brighter. One day the sun got a little bit too bright so that it had to go somewhere cold. The Taniwha was not just any type of Taniwha – it was a gold and silver one. It was the sun’s cousin’s baby. So the Taniwha  said “Rā, come back Rā I miss you”.

Then the sun came back.

How Maui Brought Earthquakes to Earth.
By Morgen

One day Maui was furious because his brothers married the fairy woman.

They almost died because of the woman. Maui was so angry, riri, he thought he was as hot as a cake that just came out of the oven.

He was so mad he shook the earth like mad and it was known as an Earthquake, kumekume a Ruaumoko.

Tane Meets People.
By Poppy

Once there was a forest that Tāne the forest God made.

Then some people came and cut one bush down. Tāne was really happy. He wanted to give the people a canoe, he also gave them a house.

They were really happy. They gave him food – they were all happy.

Tohorā, Whales
Phoenix

Once there were two huge tohorā, whales. There were six brothers, one was called Maui – he had powers. He had a hook that was made his Grandmother’s jawbone. One day Maui and his brothers went fishing down south. The two tohorā, whales, were sick because a great white shark bit them. Maui got rope and tied the rope to his hook, he threw it in the sea but he was holding the rope so he could catch fish. He caught the whale’s tails. He used his powers to bring the whales to the top of the water but the whale’s tails fell off.

The tails lay on the water and that is how Aotearoa, New Zealand was made.

The Taniwha
By Cody

Lava comes from water.  When Tangaroa, God of the Sea, pushed the lava it turned into a big water Taniwha.  The Taniwha tried to swim but when he started swimming the water got wider and wider like a stream. Then Maui and some of his brothers came to try to find some food for lunch but nothing was there.  Then around a corner they found some kumara so they took it.  They saw someone trying to paddle a boat so they told him they were his cousins and he had to take them fishing in his boat.  Because they lied the Taniwha made huge waves and tossed them out of the boat.

The Taniwha and the man in the boat shared the food and Maui and his brothers got nothing.

God of Lava
By Mika

A God of lava threw one of his lava balls at Maui.

It missed Maui and he was still alive.  Maui ran for his life and told the God of Lava to,  “Go away you Big Twit”.

The God of Lava was so puffed from chasing Maui he died. The village chief cried, “Hoorah”.  They cooked the God of Lava and buried him deep in the ground.  That is why lava lies in the centre of the Earth.

The Wonder Cave by Risha

One day when a mother and her son went for a walk they went to a butterfly cave.  The butterflies were as blue as the ocean and the cave shone like a fairy.  Everywhere was lit up like the sun.  The flowers grew until the flower was as pretty as a bird.  There was a mountain through the tunnel that was as sparkly as a mermaid.

The Sunny Tunnel by Madeleine

The leaves are floating down like butterflies.  I saw a train track as bent as a bumpy road.  I heard the waves crashing against the rocks and I heard the mosquitoes in the bushes.  The sun was shining like crystals on the leaves.  I heard birds in the trees singing Three Little Blackbirds.  Once we went through the leaves and trees we saw sand as gold as jewellery.  The trees were making a swooping sound.  It was sunny as fire.  We were having a picnic at the beach.

The Tunnel by Emily

We went to my dad’s and we went through a tunnel that looked as gorgeous as a flower.  The track is as rusty as an old pipe.  The leaves are as sparkly as gold.  It is as green as a green bug and as leafy as a tree.  Through the tunnel is a lake with swans and ducks.  When we went to the lake the water was sparkly as a dress.  We put our feet in the lake and a duck tickled them.  We called it Blueberry.

The Tunnel by Rove

I felt cold water on my feet.  I saw red back spiders in their webs and honey bees.  The tunnel was covered in shiny leaves that glittered like crystals.  Through the tunnel was a rainbow as bright as the sun.

The Way to Being The President by Harry.

One shiny day Bill English and Hillary Clinton went for a run.  The leaves were fluttering like a birds wings.  They saw butterflies flying as fast as a jet and they heard laughing as loud as a bird chirp.  The sun is hot like lava.  The grass was as shiny as greenstone.  The tunnel led to the backyard of the White House.

The Tunnel by Makaylin

I went to my Mum’s house on Saturday.  When I went to my Mum’s she showed me a special tunnel.  In the tunnel lived a unicorn that was pink like cotton candy and I saw some elves that were so cute like fluffy bunnies.  I saw some golden bunnies that looked magical.  There was a pond that had candy seaweed that looked like candy canes.  There were seven stars that looked like the seven sisters.  The sun glowed like ice.

One Hot Day by Ava

One hot day there was a little boy walking with his Grandma.  The wind was blowing like a storm and the birds were singing like a whistle.  At the end of the tunnel there was a magical beach as beautiful as a rainbow.

One day I went to my dad’s house and we went for a walk through a tunnel.  There were beautiful flowers and there was a train track as bumpy as a camel’s back.  The leaves were as shiny as gold and there were baby cheetah cubs, baby horses and swans.  Also there were newborn rabbits and newborn deer chasing around.  At the end of the tunnel there was a magic castle.  It was the Tooth Fairy’s castle.

The Train to the Scenic Tunnel
by Cody H

One day a father and son were walking through the forest to the campsite because they had not ever been to a camp trip before.  They decided to go on a canoe but it was too dark so they started to build the tent.  It looked like water.  The waves were splashing like Bigfoot stomping big, big steps.  The sun was shining like diamonds on the leaves and the track looks like a train track.

One Hot Day by Aryan

The animals were making songs.  The trees were shaking.  The people were singing.  The fish was swimming.  The grasshopper was jumping and the butterflies were flying.  The sun was twinkling like a star.  The Kiwi was walking.  The wolf was howling.  The cheetah was running and the bird was flying.

The Magic House by Jasmine

One sunny bright day two Police Officers went to a leaf tunnel with shimmering green grass as pretty as a garden.  They saw a beautiful blue and yellow butterfly.  When they got to the end of the tunnel around the corner they found a Magic House.  It looked as pretty as a golden butterfly when they were far away but when they got close it looked scary.  The house was as weird as a monkey because it was shaped like a banana.

The Tunnel by Tama

I could see shiny golden leaves like money.  I can hear crickets bussing.  I saw a butterfly fluttering around like a bird.  I heard birds singing in the trees.  At the end of the tunnel there was a river as blue as the ocean.  I could see the bumpy tracks and I could hear the wind blowing in the trees.  I saw a hedgehog in the bushes.  I heard a tiger roaring as loud as thunder in the prickly bushes.  I saw a massive whale in the ocean.

The Tunnel by Kazuma

I went into a tunnel that was a bushy one with butterflies flying, birds chirping and bees buzzing around.  I hear wind blowing around.  Mountains were at the end of the tunnel.  The tracks are as old as a rusty toy.  There was a pretty lake as glittery and shiny as glass with flowers at the edge.  Bikes were racing like card on the tracks.

It’s sunny, the birds are tweeting beautiful songs.  The ducks are quacking on the pond.  Butterflies are flying in the sky.  The caterpillars have been in their cocoons for months.  Spiders are hanging off leaves by the ground.  Crickets are cricketing like s-s-s-s.  There are beehives on trees.  Mountains are at the end of the tunnel.  There was a mineshaft in the mountains.

The Leaf Tunnel by Izak

The two brothers were walking through a leaf tunnel.  There was a broken track as broken as a broken bone.  The leaves were shining like stars in the bushes.  There were little spiders like tiny ants and there were bees buzzing like flies in the bushes.  There were soccer goals through the end of the leaf tunnel.  They kicked the golden balls in the goals.  There were leaves shining as bright as the sun and there was a playground at the end of the leaf tunnel too.  There were birds flapping around the trees.  There were pretty pink flowers that were shining like diamonds.  The grass was soft and wet.  They just noticed there was a river.  It was as shiny as crystals.

14 June 2017: We have been studying Maori myths and legends.  The children listened to two versions of the legend "Maui and the Sun" then rewrote the legend in their own words.

Maui and the Sun
by Cody

When the Sun goes down it goes slowly and it becomes dark.  Maui and his brothers couldn’t see to go home after fishing.

They decided to make a net out of flax because they could not find anything else.

The four brothers went to the Sun and got ready to catch the Sun.  In the morning when the Sun came out they said to it, “Let the children play for longer and the adults fish and do their work or we will tie you up all night.”

Now the Sun stays out for longer.

Maui and the Sun
by Brooklin

One day Maui said to his four brothers, “That Sun keeps gong up and down so quickly, we need to catch the Sun.”

“But how?” the four brothers asked.

“We could make a flax net,” replied Maui.

Soon they were done.  They built a wall by the hole where the Sun came out.

“3,2,1 Go!” Maui yelled.  They threw their rope net and caught the Sun as the Sun was coming up.  They told the Sun to move slowly so they had time to do their jobs.

Now the Sun goes slow.

Maui and the Sun
by Phoenix

Maui and his four brothers made rope from flax so they could slow the Sun because they wanted more sunlight.

They made a clay wall and hid on the other side with their rope ready.

When the Sun came out Maui said to get the Sun with the ropes.  The Sun stopped and Maui hit the Sun in the face with his hook and used his powers to make the Sun slow down.

Maui and the Sun
by Tom

Maui and his four brothers decided to catch the Sun because they wanted to slow it down.

They decided they were going to use flax ropes so they went to pick some flax.  After that they weaved it together for a long time.  Once it was weaved they lifted the ropes up, it was heavy so took a few minutes to pick up.  They put it on their shoulders and when they got to the Sun they hid behind a stone wall.

When Maui said, “Throw the net,” they threw the net then Maui hit the Sun on the nose.

Now, that’s why the Sun goes slow.

Maui and the Sun
by Annique

One day a long time ago the Sun was so lazy it shot across the land and Maui was mad and wanted it to stop.

So Maui made up a plan to stop the boiling Sun from shooting across the land.  Maui and his four brothers got heaps of flax to make lots of rope to catch the Sun.

The next day Maui and his brothers made a net to hold the Sun for Maui to hit the Sun and make it tired so it would slow down then the people would have more time to do work each day.  Maui and his brothers made a little hiding spot to throw the ropes so Maui could whack the Sun until it was too tired.

Now it goes slow.

Maui and the Sun
by Bella

“Slowing the Sun?”

“Well you got that right because that’s what this story is about so, can I start telling the story now?”

So, once one really cold night Maui woke up because he realised that yesterday the Sun just came up then it zoomed across the sky and went straight to bed.  Al least they got lots of sleep but maybe just too much sleep and rest?

That night Maui gathered his four brothers and told them his plan so they set out to slow down the Sun.  They made a huge rope out of flax then they went to the place where the Sun lives and from that day onwards the sun was slow.

Maui and the Sun
by Lily

“How can we slow the Sun?” asked Maui.  Maui wanted to pull the Sun so it could go slower.

Maui and his brothers set off and they made ropes with flax and they caught the Sun.

“You need to go slower,” said Maui, “Because everyone needs the Sun for longer so that we can see to catch fish.”

From then on the Sun went slowly across the sky.

Maui and the Sun
by Isabella

“Why does the sun go so fast?” Maui asked.

“No idea,” said one of his four brothers.
“We shall catch it,” he said.

So Maui and his brothers made a magic rope and set off on their journey to the Sun’s bed.  When they got there it was dawn.

“Quick!  Hide!” Maui shouted and the brothers got their ropes over the Sun as it rose.

“Let me go!” said the Sun.

“Only if you go slow!” said Maui.
“Fine!  Okay I will!” said the Sun.

Maui and the Sun
by Rove

Maui and his four brothers found out the sun went over the world incredibly fast.  They needed the Sun so they could go fishing for longer.

Maui and his brothers got hundreds of pieces of flax and made it into a rope.

They travelled to the Sun’s bed.  They threw they ropes then Maui whacked the Sun.

After that the Sun went slowly across the World so Maui and his brothers could fish for longer.

Maui and The Sun
by Aryan

Once upon a time in a village Maui and his four brothers thought they should make some nets and ropes in the night.

The next morning they went to catch the sun.

Maui said, “Don’t let the ropes go until I say so.”

The sun began to come out and Maui said, “Throw the ropes.”

Then Maui hit the Sun twice and said, “Don’t come up and go down really quickly.”

Then Maui and his four brothers went fishing and the village was safe because the Sun was slow.

Maui and The Sun
by Izak

Maui and his four brothers decided that the Sun went down too fast so they figured they could make string out of flax.

They went to the Sun’s hole and when it came up Maui and his four brothers threw the rope at the sun.

The ropes made it slow down so they can fish for longer and so everyone can go outside for longer every day.

Maui and the Sun
by Regan

Maui and four brothers had a plan to slow down the hot, fiery Sun.  They had a good idea how to slow the Sun down.

They got some flax and made the flax into net ropes.  When they were done they went in the night so they didn’t have to waste their time catching the Sun in the day.

Maui and his four brothers were waiting to catch the Sun.  When they saw the Sun’s teeth they threw the net and caught the Sun.  Then Maui hit the Sun a couple of times with his hook.

Now the Sun doesn’t go so fast across the sky and they have time to go fishing.

Maui and the Sun
by Morgen

One morning Maui and his four brothers woke to a nice rising Sun and went outside to go fishing but suddenly the Sun went down, sending all the fish to sleep.

Maui made a plan to make ropes but what could he make the ropes out of?  Maui had a plan to make some rope out of flax to catch the Sun.

Maui and the Sun
by Jessica

One day Maui decided to slow the Sun down but how were they going to do that?

Maui gathered his four brothers and he told them his plan and said, “Quickly let’s make some flax ropes!”  So the brothers did and when they got to the spot the Sun was just about to rise.  They quickly built a clay wall to hide behind.  Maui said, “Do not throw the ropes over the Sun until I say so.”

When the Sun was up and the Sun’s sharp teeth were at the wall of clay, Maui sprang up onto his feet and said, “Now!”  His four brothers threw the net over the Sun.  They caught the Sun and Maui hit the Sun 10 times with his magical hook.

From that day on the Sun slowed down and now Maui and his brothers could fish for longer.

Maui and the Sun
by Leilani

Why did Maui and his brothers want to catch the Sun?

Maui told his four brothers that he was very angry about the Sun moving too fast so Maui made a plan to capture the Sun.

He showed his brothers how to weave ropes with flax.  Eventually they were done so they made it into a net.

At night they tried to catch the Sun and it worked.

From then on the Sun has moved slowly.

Maui and the Sun
by Fox

Maui asked his four brothers if they wanted to go fishing.

“Okay,” replied one of his brothers, “Let’s go.”
So they got their boat and hit the water but the Sun was going down.  “Man, the Sun goes down fast!  Who wants to slow down the Sun?” Maui asked his brothers.  “Okay,” replied the others.

So Maui taught his brothers how to craft rope out of flax then at night Maui took his brothers to where the Sun rests.  When it woke, Maui and his four brothers threw their ropes and wrapped the rope around the Sun’s rays.  Then Maui jumped onto the Sun and started slanging the Sun with his Ancestor’s hook.

Maui told the Sun to slow down.  So after that the Sun slowed down and Maui and his brothers could do their work and go fishing in the sunlight.

Maui and the Sun

How could they slow down the Sun?  Maui and his brothers wondered.

One day Maui and his brothers went to get some flax to make a net to catch the Sun.

When they had finished the net the brothers went to the hole of the Sun.  Maui said, “When the Sun comes up, I’ll say now and we will spring and throw the net over the Sun.”

When the Sun came up the brothers threw the net over the Sun and told it to go slower.

From then on the Sun went slower every day so Maui and his brothers could see when they went fishing.

Maui wanted to catch the Sun because the Sun went down too quickly so he asked his brothers to help him catch the Sun.

The brothers said yes so they used flax to make ropes.  After they finished the ropes they went to where the Sun was in its hole.

When the Sun came up they told the Sun to slow down because it was going too fast.  It did slow down.

Maui and the Sun
by Mika

Maui and his four brothers thought the Sun was moving too quickly so they caught the Sun with a net made of flax.

They hid behind a wall then they said to the Sun to go slowly because if it kept going fast they would come back and catch it again and would keep hitting it with a weapon.

They didn’t have to go back and catch the Sun again because the Sun was going slowly across the sky.

May 2017: We have been learning how to write ‘metaphors’ – saying something is something it is not.

Here a some of the fabulous metaphors the children wrote for Mother’s Day.

Mum
You are a cool robot, you do so much for me
You are a queen, you are so beautiful
You are a diamond in the sky because you twinkle
You are a rose, you smell so beautiful
You are a cupcake, you are yum and sweet
You are a rainbow, you are colourful
You are a golden ring, you sparkle
You are a teddy bear, you are so cuddly
You are a star, you twinkle like an angel
You are a heart, you fill me up with love and laughter
You are a sun, you light up my day
You are a computer, you are so smart
You are a panda, you are cuddly
You are a nurse, you make me better when I am hurt
You are a hummingbird, you’re an awesome singer
You are a mouse, you’re so sneaky
You are my galaxy because you light up my world
You are a computer, you know so much information
You are a beautiful butterfly because you flutter all over the place
You are a chef, you cook so well
You are my world because I love you
to the moon and back!

We presented our metaphor poems in lovely cards for Mother's Day.

Holiday Writing

We used 'shelf' diorama's to present our holiday stories.  in our stories we needed to write compound sentences using conjunctions and we need adjectives, adverbs and the clever children wrote some similes.

Writing in S5 2017

Have a look at some of the wonderful writing that takes place in my classroom.
In our collaborative team I teach writing for 2 weeks on a 6 weekly cycle. Read through to see some samples of great work.

For our holiday recount we wrote a letter to a friend.  Our focus was on ‘hooking’ the audience through use of figurative language.  Here are some highlights that made me smile.

“You will love to hear about my holiday, it was so cool you’ll be sad to have missed it.”
“You wouldn’t believe how much fun I’ve had these holidays.”

“I like that you’re as nice as ice-cream and as beautiful as a flower.”
“I jumped as high as a leopard, it was as much fun as a spectacular birthday party with suspicious jumping people on the trampoline.”
“The movie Storks was so funny I nearly fell out of my seat!”
“We went down the giant slide as fast as a rocket, wheeeeee”
“I went to the little penguins and they were so cute, and one stared right at me!”
“The hot pool was so hot it nearly burned my pants off.”
“I went dirt biking and I went as fast as a flash!”
“We played a family cricket test match and I bowled incredibly.”
“We went to the Pancake Rocks and it was as pretty as a Monarch Butterfly.”
“I saw the Secret Life of Pets and it was so funny I got the hiccups.”
“We were treated to see the hilarious movie Storks.  If you saw it you would pee your pants with laughter.”

“I had a flipping good time at Flipping Out.”

An Olympic Disaster

Our motivation for this weeks writing came after a visit from Nicola Coles, Olympic Ambassador. Nicola discussed her journey to the Olympics as a rower in a coxless pair with Juliette Haigh and how letdowns and disappointments made her resilient and more determined than ever to prove she was at an Olympian standard.  After telling the children of their most embarrassing Olympic moment when they 'caught a crab' and fell from the boat during a final, we decided to write about an Olympic Disaster.

The Own Goal
What could be worse than something embarrassing at the Olympics?
It was the first game of football at the Olympics and I was ecstatic. When the whistle blew for the start of the game I sped off as fast as a cheetah.  The other team was pushing us back like a solid wall.  I thought that we were going the other way so when they quickly passed to me I sprinted to what I thought was my goal, out skilling everyone and I smashed the ball into the net.  Kapow! Past our goal keeper.  I shouted as loud as a lion, “Yessss!!!”
The crowd booed and booed!  Then I suddenly realised that I had scored an ‘own goal’.
I felt as red as a ripe tomato.  Luckily for me it was half-time just after that.  I ran off the pitch and cried for ever and ever.
“That was the worst day of my life,” I groaned.

By Finn

The Swimming Disaster
What could be worse than your pants falling down?
I was swimming as fast as a shark and I could hardly breathe until something so embarrassing happened.  I dare not to tell you but my swimming pants came off as I was quickly swimming as fast as I could.  Everyone was laughing and shouting as loud as monkeys could in a rainforest.
I felt so embarrassed that I just wanted to tuck myself quietly in a coccoon and then fly away free.
“Phewee, I was just dreaming thank goodness, if I wasn’t I’d be so, so, so embarrassed, more than anyone could ever be”.

By Bella

The Running Disaster
Why did I want to go because it was the worst day of my life?
I was running like a cheetah, the other runners as far away as infinity but then the most terrible thing happened to me.  I tripped over and fell and all the other runners stampeded past me.
I felt upset.  I felt silly but most of all I felt extremely embarrassed.  It was the most embarrassing day of my life!
“I think that I’m never going back because I don’t ever what that to happen again!” I cried.

By Annabel

The Worst Dream
What could be worse?
At the start of the race I was ready and feeling ecstatic.  The whistle went, run!  I definitely was going to win, of course I always win, but then suddenly my pants were down at my knees.  I kept on going and then went my underwear!  I was nudey!
Everyone laughed. “Haha, shame!”
I came 14th place.  I was as angry as a caveman.  I felt embarrassed like a pig.  I walked out disappointed I didn’t win.  A tear dripped down my face to my toes.
I cried, “I can’t do this anymore.”

Haiku Poems

What Am I?
I have very sharp teeth
I eat other smaller fish
I'm really scary.

Reflection: The focus for both Haiku poems and Limericks was following the syllable sequence and linking writing to our Wordlab Spelling programme - counting syllables.  Haiku poems were a lot easier for the children to write - although some children struggled with writing phrases rather than full sentences.  Limericks were a little harder as not all children grasped the rhythm and rhyme pattern.

Limericks

Slow Writing

Reflection: The purpose of this slow writing is to slow down writing so children can think carefully about their punctuation, can use figurative language to add interest, and can use dialogue.
They were given a topic (Accident; Trouble; Best/Worst Day of their lives) and had to start with
1. A question as a hook 2. What happened - must include adjectives or adverbs and a simile, metaphor or hyperbole and a challenge - complex sentences  3. Speech (ending).
I was really impressed with how successful this writing was - and realise that children need to slow down and have a structured format to follow.  This also extended their use of punctuation.

The Best Day of My Life
What is the best day of your life?
Well, one of the best days of my life was when I was going to Australia.  I was so excited.  I was more excited than a kangaroo jumping as high as the stars for the very first time!  I jumped in the car so fast I nearly bumped my head.  My Mum said, “We’re going now!”.  I couldn’t stop jiggling like jelly on the way to the airport.  When we got there I jumped out as fast as a cheetah.  That was the best day of my life!

The Best Day of My Life
What was the best day of your life?
What was your reaction?  Well, I definitely had a reaction.  One day, as Dad came home from work, he got into the house and said, smiling like Winn-Dixie, “I have some exciting news.  We’re getting a puppy!”  “Wow, thanks Dad,” I said jumping as high as the moon.  “You’re the best dad ever and you’re as kind as a fairy.”  I felt so excited, this was as cool as going to Disneyland!.  “Let’s call him Charlie,” we cried happily.

Sleepy Meepy
Have you ever felt really sleepy in class?
I was in math class and it was as hot as the blazing flames of the sun.  Everything was blurry in my eyes then suddenly ‘Poof!’ – Everything was black.  I heard a shouting voice, I was at a football game and I was standing still, a football was heading my way.  I suddenly put up my foot, the ball zoomed straight back the way it came.  “Saffron, Saffron!”  I looked all around me, people were cheering for me.
I was suddenly slapped.  “Who? What? When? Where? What happened?” I said shakily.  I heard a booming voice, “Saffron, why were you asleep in class again?”

Got In Trouble
What on earth was I doing today?
I was hiding in the cloakbay, then I jumped out, scaring Mrs Adamson with a party popper.  She got such a big fright that she jumped as high as an elephant and dropped her cup of tea.  I said, “Shame on you!” and I was in big trouble.
Mrs Adamson said, “It stops right now!” then she said, “I better have a talk with your mum, you little devil!”

Mother's Day Metaphors

The children were really proud of their Mother's Day cards.  They wrote fantastic metaphors about their mothers to go in the card.

Mum is a garden.  She is pretty like a flower and smells like roses.
Mum is vacuum cleaner.  She cleans up after me.
Mum is a rainbow.  She is colourful and beautiful.
Mum is a jewel.  She sparkles and shines.
Mum is a teddy bear.  She is soft and cuddles me lots.
Mum is a family photo.  She gives me lots of memories.
Mum is a friendship bracelet.  She is always my friend.
Mum is a heart.  She gives lots of love.
Mum is a star.  She lights up my life.
