Gail and Joan, who are sisters, started their teaching careers in North America and now work with teachers and students throughout the world.  They established The Daily CAFE website as a resource for educators in 2008 and have continued to develop the knowledge base ever since.

“We want what every teacher wants: effective teaching methods that can adapt as things change, and to lead our children to a lifetime of learning.”  —Gail Boushey and Joan Moser

How does it work?
Students select from five authentic reading and writing choices, working independently toward personalised goals, while the teacher meets individual needs through whole-group and small-group instruction, as well as one-on-one conferring. These choices include
  • Read to Self,
  • Work on Writing,
  • Read to Someone,
  • Listen to Reading, and
  • Word Work.
The benefits of The Daily 5 for teachers and schools include the following:
  • students develop independence, stamina, and accountability;
  • less time consumed by classroom management leaves more for instruction;
  • improves schoolwide literacy achievement; and
  • behaviours of independence transfer to other content areas.
